Walmart spokesman Dan Fogleman dismissed the California rally as “a publicity stunt by the UFCW to seek media attention in order to further their political agenda and financial objectives.”
On Monday, Chicago police arrested 17 peaceful protesters who turned up to show support for those who had been on Walmart strike since September 15.
Last Thursday saw the first-ever employee walk-out in 50 years of Walmart’s rich history. In mid-September, a 15-day Walmart strike that included a six-day, 50-mile march for safe jobs by warehouse workers, was seen in Southern California. Hundreds of Walmart staff marched in Dallas and San Diego for better work conditions around the same time.
Walmart has long been a target of workers’ rights groups, who advocate higher wages, more flexibility in hours and an end to the punishments such as reduced shifts that they claim are meted out to workers intending to group together.
Around 200 angry protesters showed up at a conference call meeting of investors and analysts earlier today at Walmart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Leaders of Our Walmart also declared to join the Walmart strike on Black Friday 2012, if their demands are not met.
Evelin Cruz, a department manager at Walmart in Pico Rivera, California, said, “People were really tired that any time they would speak out against the pay, hours, how much they would work, that management would cut their hours or not give them a schedule.” Cruz is one of thousands of members of Our Walmart, a labor organisation supported by the United Food and Commercial Workers which defends Walmart workers’ rights.
Walmart strike on Black Friday 2012, which falls on the day after Thanksgiving, is likely to affect sales of the busiest retail day of the year, following protests in the form of walkouts and marches in Dallas, San Diego, Chicago and Los Angeles, to oppose the labour practices of the world’s largest private employer.
